NEON is a consortium of 21 hospital partners and 3 Independent Health Facilities serving residents of north eastern Ontario. The consortium shares an electronic health record, which paves the way for data accessibility so health care providers can better serve their patients.

NEON was first created through the shared software contract with Meditech in October 1998, followed by the NEON Shared Information System Service Agreement in 1999 between 7 corporations. The goals of the partnership were and continue to be: the creation of an integrated patient record to allow for seamless delivery of healthcare through Northeastern Ontario and realizing opportunities for sharing resources and economies of scale and thus cost savings.

The NEON acknowledges that our goal can only become a reality by partnering with other Northern Health Care initiatives. Over a three year period from 2003 to 2006, 3 corporations were added (Smooth Rock Falls Hospital, St-Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake and Lady Dunn Health Centre in Wawa).

In 2008, NEON implemented a standards based system, to ensure NEON can support all 26 NELHIN hospitals' move, as well as, fulfill its integrated patient record strategy.  Shortly after, the MICS group of hospitals Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson, Anson General Hospital in Iroquois Falls, and Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane, joined the NEON Consortium.

In 2009 and 2010 the 6 corporations, (Blind River District Health Centre, Espanola General Hospital, Hôpital Notre Dame, Hornepayne Community Hospital, Manitoulin Health Centre & Sensenbrenner Hospital), implement all administrative and clinical services.

Our latest partnering hospitals are Hôpital de Mattawa Hospital, Weeneebayko Area Health Authority and West Nipissing General Hospital.  Three new Independent Health Facilities customers were also added.
